Plant Vs Plant, and what about stars?

It is an ancient Indian tradition to plant trees corresponding to each sign of the moon. The belief is that a person will prosper in life if he/she plants and takes care of a tree associated with their Nakshatra [ there are 27 stars as per Indian astrology]. The growth and flourishing of the tree indicates the individual’s prosperity, that was the firm faith prevalent. If a kid of today is asked the question – ‘what is a plant? The most probable answer will be ‘factory’ and not ‘tree’. With the single point program of earning money, at any cost and by any means, dominating the minds of people, the faith faded away and trees lost their importance and to a major extent their existence.

What is Biodiversity? Short film by Babul Films.

To commemorate International Day for Biological Diversity 2015, Indian Botanists invited articles, opinions, videos, short film etc. on www.indianbotanists.com. The theme was selected in the similar line as announced by UNEP and the theme was, 'PLANT BIODIVERSTY AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT’.

Babul Films released a short film, explaining, what is biodiversity? The same was shared with Indian Botanists. We are pleased to publish the video here, on the occasion of International Biodiversity Day 2015. 'Engaging kids in the film is a great tool for awareness', mentioned Babul Films in tweet to Indian Botanists.

Indian Botanists congratulates 'Babul Films' and  the child actors in the video and encourages them for more such assignments. This video will also inspire many plant lovers, professional botanists to make such short films to explain the issue in a more effective way.

Enjoy the video,

Will 'Glowing Plants' Replace Street Lights?

Can you recall the glowing vegetation in Avatar, an Oscar winning sci-fi movie by James Cameroon? It is high quality digital art and graphics. Films do complement the process of invention. Imagine trees as streetlamps, potted flowers that give reading light. Well, some biologists have started a project to develop glowing plants to make this a reality. These do-it-yourself experiments and also some institutional efforts use synthetic biology and genetic engineering to commercialize glowing plants, starting with ornamental ones.

BOTANY and NAMES - BioDiEt

Yes. It is about names like you all thought of, yet it is not. Not, because I am not talking about the Botanical Nomenclature - the formal, scientific naming of plants; and definitely not about ICN or International Code of Botanical Nomenclature - ICBN.
It is all about the places that are named after seeds, fruits, plants, trees and anything that is botanical.
It is pertinent here to rewind my timeline by a couple of months. After having written the first article on Botany and Cinema (Light Action and Camera with Plant Sciences, published on Indian Botanists Blog-o-Journal on December 6th 2012), I was struggling to find more material for my next article. True, I was busy with Cinema and in promoting my recently formed NGO and trying to find a sustainable revenue model for it. Having worked for the Government for almost three decades, I realised that it is not an easy task adjusting to the open market conditions. Rabish Chandra gently reminded me about my next text with pictures. A kind of panic started in me and I was feeling more helpless, for the topic demanded heavy research and in depth knowledge, a really time consuming process.
