In our previous post we analysed the position of all states
of India with regard to biotechnological research based on the number of
ongoing projects funded by Department of Biotechnology as March 6th 2013. Based on the number of
ongoing projects we categorised different states into three groups. States
falling under different group are shown in table.
Further, we analysed the performance of members of each group based on the number of projects received in last three years. All the members of Group-A shows decline in 2010-11 except Delhi, West Bengal and Chandigarh in terms of the number of projects received in the year 2009-10. However in the year 2011-12 all the states categorised under Group A show upward movement. This may be one indication that department has funded a large number of projects in the financial year 2011-12.

Among Group B also there was sharp increase in the number of projects received during the year 2011-12 except Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur and Uttarakhand where there was decline in the number of projects received as compared to the financial year 2010-11. In many states during these financial years number of projects received were more less than twenty. Remember, threshold limit to include the states in Group B we kept was twenty numbers of ongoing projects.

Coming to Group C, though the numbers of projects received in last three years were less as compared to Group B and Group A there was increase in the number of projects received during the year 2011-12 for most of the states. Sikkim could open its account only in 2011-12, Meghalaya, Jharkhand and Nagaland performed badly in the year 2011-12 as compared to the previous financial years. Chhattisgarh performed constantly in all the three financial years.

From the above analytical study we may conclude that most of the states shown a positive trends towards biotechnological research from 2009 to 2012. Over all we may say that status of biotechnological research has improved in India at-least on the basis of the number of projects sanctioned to different states. The quality and total investment of the projects can give the real story. Government of India has decided to take some important steps to encourage Scientists Engaged in Quality Research & Development.
